René was born in 1940 in Laupersdorf. René's father was Alphons Kaufmann and his mother is Yvonne Gogniat. His paternal grandparents were Beda Kaufmann and Susanne Meister. He has four brothers and three sisters, named Beda, Willhelm "Willy*, Bruno, Franz, Yvonne, Susanne and Claire. He is the second oldest of the eight children.
